"Madam has the contours of a girl I knew in Dansoman and sculptures sold at Arts Centre and Bitter Lemon bottles. Slender top and round the rest. A perfect holy roundness that is proof of God's existence and His goodness furthermore. Her skin is ageless, creaseless, paint. Her lower back a hiding place. The color brooks no simile. If you have been to Ghana, you know. If you have never been to Ghana then you might not understand the way the darkest skin can glow as with the purest of all lights." - Taiye Selasi, 'Driver'

"Never ride a bike with the brakes on. If something is proving too difficult, give up and do something else. Try to live without resort to perseverance. But writing is all about perseverance. You've got to stick at it. In my 30s I used to go to the gym even though I hated it. The purpose of going to the gym was to postpone the day when I would stop going. That's what writing is to me: a way of postponing the day when I won't do it any more, the day when I will sink into a depression so profound it will be indistinguishable from perfect bliss." - Geoff Dyer in the Guardian

You know that Rumspringa thing the Amish do—where for a year, teenagers are unleashed from the community to live in the outside world and are then given the choice to willingly return to a more traditional lifestyle? Every time I leave New York for a long weekend, it's like Rumspringa, but opposite. Four days away in the countryside up in Hanover, NH, and it's more than a little difficult to come back.

"The core code of conduct governing fashion can sometimes be characterized as jungle law. According to the unspoken rules of the business, the person you had dinner with last night might, if it is expedient, cut you dead at a fashion show the following morning. Somehow this ugly reality is found usual and acceptable." - Guy Trebay, New York Times

"Neuroscientists explain that synapses occur inside the brain when we’ve made a connection between various different things. The more random the components connected, the more synapses occur. Synapses are the basis of creativity. In other words, synapses firing equals creative joy." - Fast Company meme story

Today's my one-year StyleBistro-iversary—and what a year it's been! I'm so proud of my team and how far we've come in the past 12 months. Here's a look back at day one, hour one of StyleBistro's first day in its first-ever New York City office. Me and Alicia, the company's first and then-only New York City employees, an open-plan loft space in Chelsea, moving furniture, the whole thing. Today, we're 25-strong in the Village.
