Other people who don't-didn't-won't drive

I can't drive, I'm in my mid-30s, and, so, I tend to get a lot of crap from people I don't know very well about my abstention from the great American pastime of operating a motor vehicle. Once, someone even said to me: "You should learn to drive—get some independence!" As if knowing how to drive put him on a higher plane of self-sufficiency—obviously not, from just a quick comparative cataloguing of our life experiences—whatever, he was a dick.

Anyway, there's a great story in the latest issue of Tatler about not knowing how to drive—and it's not one of those "Old Person Learns to Drive for the First Time" schticks. In it, the author Mary Killen, talks about how she doesn't drive—and how people like us are in good company.

Here are some people you may or may not have heard of who don't-didn't-won't drive:
- Albert Einstein
- Sir David Attenborough
- David Mitchell
- David Sedaris
- Manolo Blahnik
- Philip Treacy
- Brian Eno
- Lord Melvyn Bragg
- Adele
- David Starkey
- Ricky Gervais
- Lady Gaga

"I have a lazy, Woody Allen-ish view that anywhere you can't walk to, or get to by Tube or taxi, is innately suspect," journalist Matthew D'Ancona told Tatler. "Non-drivers are one of the few minorities it is still socially acceptable to ridicule; I fully expect to find a flaming cross outside my house one evening."

So. There it is.
